October 3 Planning Meeting Follwup

Attending:  Tim Obermier, Ron Tuttle, Alan Wibbels, Jason Everett, John Stritt

Purpose for meeting:

  • To preview TECHS high school program 2005-06
  • To discuss opportunities from a partnership between post-secondary and TECHS program
  • To discuss possible connections between business community and TECHS programs
TECHS has grown from 5 schools and 25 students to 16 schools with 70+ students.

TECHS partnership opportunties with UNK for 05-06:
  • 20/20 Vision Conference - http://2020.esu10.org/studenttrack
    • Poster sessions by students following main address
  • TECHS computer building day - February 14, 2005
    • 8:30 - 2:30
    • Need to make arrangements for lunch.
    • Dr. Obermier is checking to see if he can find a location for hosting this event.
    • If UNK students are available, we would use one for each group.
    • Would like UNK students to have a couple of break sessions showing some of their technology tools or products.  Maybe one in the am and pm
    • ESU 10 will oversee the presentation.
TECHS partnership opportunities with business community:
  • Jason Everett has been in contact with Cindy Reichart at Kearney Chamber to make them aware of the TECHS program and how it fits in with the Chamber goals.  Jason will try and schedule a time to visit with Cindy and catch her up with the project.
  • Identify sites that might host a student career field trip in April.
Future partnership ideas:
  • In November, a second planning meeting will be set up to include members of the business and post secondary communities.  Included in this group would be Frontier, representatives of the Chamber, UNK and CCC.  (Anyone who is part of this meeting may extend an invitation to others.  John Stritt will be in contact with pre-planning team to set a date for this meeting.  He will also create a tentative agenda that pre-planning team can review, edit, add to.)
  • Post-secondary and TECHS will consider educational tracks
    • 3 - 4 plan (TECHS - 4 year school)  or 3 - 2 - 2 plan (TECHS - Community College - 4 year school)  or 3 - 2 - 2 plan (TECHS - Community College)
      • TECHS 3 year plan could include:  (All students would start with year 1 with year 2 and 3 as options)
        • TECHS course - year 1
        • Certification classes i.e. microsoft, A+, cisco, etc - year 2
        • Preceptership type or introductory technology class - year 3
      • 4 year school or community college plan
        • Could any of the TECHS courses receive college credit?
  • Partnership with immediate business community - UNK assist in model
    • Create a model of how a partnership might enhance economic development
Future Goal - Extending project into 06-08
  • AIM Institute will be at 20/20 conference.  Alan Wibbels will make them aware of the TECHS goal and seek some guidance on possible funding for expanding the project.
  • TECHS informational piece will be developed to be presented to AIM at an arranged meeting.  The intent is to have this meeting before the end of 2005.
    • Overview of TECHS
    • Post-secondary partnership with TECHS
    • Business community model for career education extended to economic development
    • Plan for expanding project to other areas in state using post-secondary and business model
    • Funding request and time length
