FAQ's About Build a Computer Day:

Do we have to buy a computer?  Can we just bring one with us.
Because we are building as well as installing the Linux OS, it would be impossible to do this process in one day if we had a variety of different technology.  If you are interested in loading linux on a second machine, you are encouraged to bring a second unit - mac or pc.

What is the cost for the computer kit?  The cost of the computer kit is $400.  The kit will include a keyboard but you are responsible to bring your own monitor.

What are we going to do with the computer when we are done?
  Here are some ideas:
  • Your school will have a computer to take back to your school.  Applications such as the Firefox browser, Word star (a microsoft type word program), and many more applications will be added so this will be a completely functional desktop system that could be used within your school.  As this is open source, all of these programs are for no charge.
  • The computer could serve as a web, podcast, email, or some other type of server.  Again the open source applications are no charge.
  • The computer could be used as a firewall device.
  • The computer could become a windows based unit by purchasing the latest windows operating system and applications.
  • The computer could be used as a fund raiser by having a raffle for the unit.
Do we need to be in TECHS or plan to take TECHS in the future to participate?  No.  The day will outline how a unit of instruction is carried out.  During the day, there will be a TECHS overview presented to teachers.  Teachers from TECHS schools will be in attendance and will also be able to share about the course.
