Planning Meeting - December 6, 2006

Agenda - Followup items boldfaced

1.  RUS grant review - what are we going to do with the grant that was awarded and what about future grants - what are the needs.
  • Update on current grant $385,000
  • Possible second grant idea $500,000
  • Career Education grant $75,000
2.  What about TECHS for next year.
  • 23 sites and 134 students
  • Curriculum Changes
    • First semester survey responses
    • Break up Internet Safety Unit
    • Buy Atomic Learning Licenses?  Jason will check on costs for Atomic Learning
    • Conduct periodic conference calls - Graci will find out costs/how to based on NSSRS
  • Marketing
    • Present at NETA
    • Build a Computer Day within each ESU area in Feb and March.  Discussed who we might send to do these activities. 
    • Brochure
    • T-Shirts
  • Enrollment fees for 2007-08.  Must determine what we need to run program.  Possible reduction in distance learning schools.  Discuss a flat fee of $500.
  • UNK TECH Forum 2007
3.  What is the plan for using the TECHS Non-Fund tuituion - $17,312.50 (see spreadsheet)  a) conference calls b) atomic learning licenses c) lighting/sound improvements in studio (bring in outside person to review our setting) d)  purchase a GenTech license e) new storage server f) cover conference expenses - check with Ron.
4.  Additional course offerings connected with TECHS:
  • Ron has been visiting with UNK about a spin off of TECHS for a college class.  What would be the benefits and costs.  a) Ron will visit more with UNK to see what they may like to do.  b)  Jason suggested that students could serve an internship in support of the schools.  c)  John felt that if something were to be done, it could not be in place until second semester of next year.
  • Jason and I have visited about a Dan Senstock West project.  Dan is taking high school students and creating video resumes.  Could we model that program.  Jason will contact Dan to find out more about the program and what if anything we might be able to incorporate in our instructional program.
  • Final Cut Pro and Garageband  Could be a lead in class to a Dan Senstock type program.  Could also be a phase 2 program to TECHS for those interested in multimedia.
  • Oracle AcademyDatabase Ron will pass this on to Nate to review.  This could be another phase 2 direction beyond TECHS.
    • Design & Programming with SQL 
    • Database Programming with PL/SQL
5.  We are deficient in space - Gordon took half of my office.  If we think we can add more services, can that assist in justifying a need for building on to the ESU.
6.  What about story telling part 3?  Videocue and wirecast type of instruction.  Jason commented that the current digital storytelling format could be remapped with a) intro to storytelling, b) podcasting, and c) video journalism.
7.  What are the next steps in getting the conference rooms wired?  Frank Forrestt from Cytek was at the ESU today and visited with Ron, John, and Gordon about the conference centers.  He will followup with Tom at Cytek to see what could the next steps are to move forward on the project.
