December 13 Followup

Attending - Scott Fedderson, Buckle; Tim Obermier and Ron Tuttle, UNK; Bob Bednar, Pleasanton Schools; Wayne Bell, Ron Cone, Jason Everett, ESU 10; John Stritt, TVDEC.

Agenda -

  • Overview of TECHS by John Stritt
  • 2020 conference - Reviewed student comments of presentation.  Discussion about future conference
    • Because of size, consider breaking the conference into one for adult educators and a second for student/teachers.
    • Student/teacher conference could be geared to hands on and less education theory/policy sectionals
    • See if the Kearney business community might serve a dual role by sponsoring and also presenting sectionals on how technology impacts their business.
  • Post-secondary partnership
    • Discussed that a UNK/CCC and TECHS educational partnership could be a model for TECHS and other post-secondary institutions.
    • Articulation
      • TECHS would probably be considered as a high school only class.  (Bob Bednar suggested that Tech Prep through CCC might consider this as part of their program.)
      • TECHS is looking for additional classes beyond year one of TECHS.  Could the post-secondary schools provide certification classes and technology entry classes online or over distance education).
    • Discussed how post-secondary might assist in supporting and promoting TECHS i.e. conference, field trip, class articulation, or community internship or employment link.
  • Community partnership
    • Discussed that the community, UNK/CCC and TECHS educational partnership could be a model for TECHS and other communities as it relates to economic development.
    • Dr. Bell provided an update on the Center for Emerging Technology.  Discussed how TECHS fits within the vision of services supported through such a center.  Dr. Bell will be meeting with the Emerging Technology committee in January.  John will work with Dr. Bell to see if TECHS can be mentioned during that meeting.

    • Discussion about the technology needs of businesses in Kearney.  Scott shared that the Buckle has a difficult time finding qualified programmers from the midwest.  Dr. Tuttle felt a technology needs survey might provide the number of information technology employees and skills needed.
    • Chamber was mentioned as a contact organization for further TECHS discussion.  Bob also mentioned the Buffalo County Economic Development organization.
    • Other discussion was around identifying other community groups or individuals as contacts for the program.

  • John Stritt and Jason Everett will continue to develop the TECHS and partnership plan by
    • working with Dr. Bell as a program within the Emerging Technology Center
    • contacting community agencies to share about the TECHS program
    • working with UNK/CCC regarding articulation of classes connected with TECHS
    • work with ESU 10 in reviewing 2006 2020 Conference Plan
    • plan a February meeting of TECHS advisory committee
  • Others who expressed interest but were not able to attend include John Horvath, UNK; Michelle Roggasch, CCC;  Denise Zwiener, Buffalo County Extension Services; Corliss Dixon, Pleasanton Public Schools TECHS coordinator; Bob Krier, Frontier Communications; and Justin Daake, UNK student and 2004-05 TECHS student.
